October 19, 2017-Reading #3// The Help by Kathryn Stockett
Topic Choice #3- Plot
In the novel, The Help, Celia treats Minny, a black maid, with respect as she would to a white woman because she has nothing against black people. Minny becomes suspicious about how she is treated by Celia. This happens in Celia's house and this scene is important because Minny has never been treated like this since her past experiences with white people being racist and disrespectful to her. Celia doesn't really know how to interact with a black maid and she doesn't know how hire a maid. This scene shows that Celia isn't racist to black maids and respect a maid that had never been respected by a white woman. This scene takes place in the rising action because in the novel the chapter begins in Celia's house and Celia invites Minny to sit with her to have a cold drink. In The Help, this is the rising action when Minny gets suspicious when Celia said this, “Can I get you a cold drink? Set down and I’ll bring you something.” Then in Minny' mind she thought this, "And that’s my clue: something funny’s going on here."

Reading Log #2, Topic #2-Conflict
September 25, 2017
In the book, The Devil's Web, there is conflict between James Purnell and Madeline Raine, they were in love for a few minutes when they met outside of a summer ball. He told her that it was a lust only he felt for her and told her to leave him if she knew what was good for her. That same night he left and sailed to Canada a few days later and Madeline never seen him since. The way James left had caused Madeline to feel intense hatred, which was unfamiliar for her and she couldn't manage it. She was ruined both emotionally and spiritually and it would take her months, even years, to regain from this incident that happened. After four years, Madeline states that she disliked him and never loved him and she says that nothing would have changed during these four years. She received a letter saying that James will come and see Madeline again and she wants to see him to prove that it was foolish obsession of the past. She wants to forget everything about this and she just wants happiness. But Madeline probably prefers James to not come because she had to recover from his leaving and she says that it isn't fair that he should come back and throw her feelings into chaos again. If James never comes, then Madeline will never see him again and she had been living through this incident for nothing.
